Our History
Seeking First the Kingdom of God
Founded in 1867, Central Christian Church has enjoyed more than a century of influencer involvement in Ironton, Ohio and beyond. In 1975, we moved into our new facility where we are still located right in the heart of Ironton. Our purpose has never changed as we still strive every day to spread the gospel to all you need to hear in Ironton and throughout the world. At Central Christian Church, we serve, we worship, we study, we fellowship, and we give all of the glory to God.
Organized on November 11, 1867, for the "purpose of forming a congregation to worship God according to His Word as revealed by His Holy Spirit through the Apostles," Central Christian Church began. On July 7, 1868, the trustees purchased a lot on which to build a church located at Third and Washington St. James H. Dodd was chosen minister on September 16, 1868. On August 17, 1870, the trustees authorized a loan for the purpose of building a meeting house. During this time services were held in the courthouse and in the homes of members. On June 4, 1871, the first meeting in the new church was held. At the end of the first year there were 86 members enrolled. The new building on Fifth and Quincy Street was dedicated January 5, 1908. The extra Bible School classrooms were added in 1937. The organ was purchased and the basement was dug and outfitted in later years. November 5, 1959, the local congregation voted unanimously to purchase the hospital building and grounds across the street, known as the Deaconess Hospital. We were already using eight rooms of the building for classes. The ground is half a city block. In October 1962, the congregation approved the purchase of the Walter A. Edwards property at 814 S 5th Street. The property was located adjacent to the Church at Fifth and Quincy. In September 1967, the tract of land on which the present church stands was purchased from the estate of Dr. William F Marting. Construction on the present building began in March 1974 and the building was occupied on September 7, 1975, for the first worship service.
